Theatrical Performances: Celebrating Tolerance and Unity
On February 4, 2025, as part of World Interfaith Harmony Week, the UNESCO Chair in Comparative Study of World Religions at the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan hosted a theatrical performance under the theme: “You Are Not Orphaned”
Performed by the Academy’s student theater group, these productions highlighted compassion, inclusivity, and Uzbekistan’s rich cultural and religious diversity. Through powerful storytelling and dramatic expression, the performances emphasized the values of human fraternity, mutual respect, and interfaith harmony.
“You Are Not Orphaned” is inspired by Rahmat Fayzi’s renowned novel and the acclaimed 1962 film of the same name, considered one of the masterpieces of Uzbek cinema. Based on true events from World War II, the story depicts the remarkable compassion of a Tashkent blacksmith, Shomahmud Shoahmedov, and his wife, Baxri Akramova, who opened their hearts and home to 14 orphaned children of diverse nationalities and faiths. This deeply moving play explores themes of solidarity, mutual support, and humanity’s shared responsibility to care for one another, reflecting the extraordinary spirit of unity and kindness that characterized Uzbekistan during times of hardship.
Art and theater serve as a bridge between cultures, inspiring dialogue and understanding. This event showcased how Uzbekistan remains a model of peaceful coexistence and unity among diverse communities.
