Mutually beneficial cooperation between Uzbekistan and Saudi Arabia is on the rise. Especially, during the working visit of the head of the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan to the Center of Islam – Saudi Arabia, showed that there are many common goals.
During the meetings with heads of a number of ministries, departments, agencies and centers in Riyadh, Jeddah, Makkah and Madinah, the hosts underlined that under the leadership of the President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev the country is gaining the attention of the international community in all spheres, especially in the religious and enlightenment sphere. Today Saudi Arabia has started a period of reform in the religious and educational spheres. At the same time, Uzbekistanʼs reform in this area is interested Saudis as a vital experience, as religious tolerance, religious education, especially imam-khatibsʼ training, retraining and upgrading skills are revised.
Yahya bin Junaid, head of the Center for Research and Education at the Riyadh, which has a high status in the Arab and Islamic world, said that Saudi Arabia is Uzbekistanʼs cradle of Islamic civilization. He emphasized that relations between the two countries are closely linked to such spheres as religious, cultural, scientific and tourism, and given that today the need to jointly study and solve jointly the problems and issues facing the Islamic world is a prerequisite for the time.
In addition, Abdulla bin Mohammad Ad-Foazan, the head of the National Communication Center named after the King of Abdul-Aziz, also informed that the national program VISION-2030 was designed to prevent religious extremism among young people and prevent conflicts between sects, tribes and inter-ethnic. It was proposed to explore existing problems and build strong partnerships with them.
General Secretary of the World Islamic League Muhammad Abdulkarim Al-Issa said that there is a growing number of cases in the world today that are used for political purposes. As a result, the name of Islam is being used with radicalism, extremism, and terrorism. Saudi Arabia is currently trying to overcome these problems.
Another noteworthy thing is that the General Secretary of the World Islamic League said that Saudi Arabia has emphasized the importance of supporting religious tolerance in recent years and opposed the politization of Islam. This position of the Saudis is exactly the same with Uzbekistan. At the initiative of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyayev, at the 72nd session of the UN General Assembly, a special resolution of the UN General Assembly “Education and Religious Tolerance” was adopted and received broad support in the international arena.
This resolution is especially important when it comes to promoting extremism and terrorism in the world and raising awareness about education and effectively combating global threats during a period when intensive, uncompromising relations with various confessions and beliefs are strengthened. Because ignorance can be overcome only by enlightenment.
Saudi Arabia, recognized as the center of the Islamic world, is concentrating on a radical renewal of the curriculum of the imams in reforming the religious and educational spheres. Until the end of 2018, the leadership of the Kingdom, which was not satisfied with the existing system in the country, suspended the activities of the imam-khatib schools and transferred the right to deal with this issue to a government agency, the Ministry of Islam, Waqfs and Appeals.
According to this ministry, the Saudi imams will now be selected from various universities and will be recruited after retraining. The imams upgrade their skills every month at branches of the Ministry of Islamic affairs, Waqfs and Appeals in all regions of the country. At the end of the course, if they do not pass the exam, the imamʼs activity will stop. In addition, the Ministry of Islamic Affairs, Waqf, and Appeal also began the practice of preparing abstracts for Friday lectures. These abstracts are prepared to take into account the most pressing issues and are delivered to Imams.
In short, a number of social and educational issues were discussed at the meetings of the delegation of the International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan in Saudi Arabia. Most importantly, since the beginning of the year, the development of textbooks on the Arabic language, conducting research, publishing books, organizing scientific conferences, cooperation between professors, teachers, researchers and specialists have been agreed upon.
