Department of ISESCO on Studying Islamic Civilization

‘Another initiative of Uzbekistan is related to the establishment of special department of the Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization under the Tashkent Islamic University. The main direction of the new chair will be related to history and present situation of education, science and culture in the Muslim world. So, the Chair would offer specific courses to the students about it’.

The 43rd session of the Council of Ministers of Foreign Affairs the Organization of Islamic Cooperation was held on 18-19 October in 2016 in Tashkent under the slogan “Education and Enlightenment – Path to Peace and Development”. The President of the Republic of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev participated in the event and took the initiative to open the Special Chair of Islamic Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ISESCO) at the Tashkent Islamic University.

On May 24, the delegation of Uzbekistan met with the Director-General of the Organization Abdul-Aziz bin Othman Al-Tuweyjri at the ISESCO Headquarters in Rabat. They discussed the issues of training specialists in the sphere of Islamic Studies in Uzbekistan and noted role of government in providing religious and intercultural tolerance. During this meeting Director General of ISESCO and rector of Tashkent Islamic University signed the Memorandum of Understanding on the establishment of ISESCO Chair for the Study of Islamic Civilization.

The purpose of the Chair is to study the education system, science and the history of culture and their current status in the Muslim world, and to provide students with a profound knowledge of them.

For this purpose, the Chair conducts scientific research in two main directions. First, is concerning to the heritage, scientific works, manuscripts of ancestors, write educational and scientific literature, brochures and books based on them. The second is related to the study of history of science, education and culture in Muslim societies, its present state, perspectives. So, to study Islamic scientific and educational institutions, social, educational, cultural, economic life in Muslim societies, brightening the prospects of cooperation with Muslim countries, providing transparent information about Islam, preparation of scientific and educational publications.

Opening ceremony of the ‘ISESCO Chair for the study of Islamic civilization’ was held in Tashkent on August 26, 2017. Due to this, the opening ceremony of the department was attended by the Director-General of ISESCO Abdul-Aziz Usman al-Tuweyjri in this regard.

It should be noted that at present there are 18 ISESCO chairs in the world, and ‘ISESCO Chair for the study of Islamic civilization’ of International Islamic Academy of Uzbekistan is distinguished by its uniqueness. Since the 2017-2018 academic year, masters on a specialty ‘The History (Islamic civilization) have been prepared at the Chair.
